The Athletic Director…

KAREN ANDREONE – Presently the Athletic Director and President of the NSCHSGAA, Ms. Andreone received her BS from SUNY Cortland, and her MA from Adelphi University.  During her collegiate playing career, she competed in volleyball, tennis, bowling, basketball, badminton, and softball.   She was a two-time New York State Collegiate Champion in badminton, also achieving a New York State Championship in tennis during that time.  She began her coaching career at Nassau Community College and Hofstra University where she coached basketball, badminton, qualifying for the NCAA Nationals.  Coaching softball, her teams won five New York State Championships and qualified for the College World Series twice. 

Continuing her coaching career, Ms. Andreone spent 23 years on the “Lady Mustangs” sideline as the varsity volleyball coach.  In 8 trips to the New York State title game, her teams captured 4 state titles.  Additionally, her teams won 9 division titles and 5 NSCHSGAA League titles.  The over-all record during those years stands at 372-174.  In badminton, she coached 74 individual League champions as well as 32 League finalists.  Her badminton teams (226-41), also achieved a similar level of success winning 22 League titles. Similarly, her 14-year 275-125 record as the varsity softball coach at Our Lady of Mercy continued her level of coaching success.  Her teams won 2 NYSCHSAA State, 3 League and 8 Divisional titles. Ms. Andreone has been the recipient of numerous awards.  Inducted into both the Nassau Community College Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Girls Brooklyn High School Athletic Hall of Fame, she has been awarded the NSCHSGAA “Coach of the Year Award” a total of 13 times and Administrator of the Year on three occasions.  She was selected by the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports to be inducted into the 2014 New York State High School Softball Hall of Fame.

Coaches…

ANGELA BUSCEMI - Asst. Varsity Basketball Coach - is a 2012 graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Academy where she played basketball and softball for four years.  She graduated from NYIT and is now attending graduate school.  Angela has been coaching in the program since 2013.

ANGEL LUIS COLON - Head Varsity Softball - Angel is a United States Marine Corps Veteran and a Retired New York City Police Office.  He has over 30 years of experience playing, coaching, and managing High School/College level softball and coaching girls travel softball teams in Suffolk.  He is a certified CUDIT Concentric softball hitting instructor.  Angel is a member of the softball coaching Organizations from NFCA, NFHS, and AOC.  He also has an undergraduate of Science in Sport Management from SUNY Cortland.

KATELYN DEVINNEY - Assistant Varsity Softball - Katelyn is a graduate of John H. Glenn High School and a current senior at St. Joseph's College.  While at St. Joseph’s she pitched for the Women's Softball Team.  Katelyn is also a pitching coach and private softball trainer.

SEAN DONOVANCo-Head Varsity Soccer – Sean received his Master’s in School Psychology and has been a psychologist at the Nassau BOCES Rosemary Kennedy School for the past 25 years.  He is a graduate of C.W. Post College where he received a BA in Psychology and played Division 11 Men’s Soccer.  He competed in both the NCAA and ECAC tournaments.  He has been part of both boys and girls LIJSL, EDP and NPL top 10 teams as an assistant coach and goalie trainer.  He has been instrumental in assisting players towards getting recruited to the NCAA Division 1, 11 and 111 level soccer programs.  He holds Level 1 & 2 Goalie Diplomas from the NSCAA and is currently a member of the United States Coaches Association.  His son played as a goalkeeper for LIJ, EDP, and Smithtown West Varsity Soccer and his daughter played on the UMBC Division 1 Women’s Soccer Team.

KATHERINE HACKETTAssistant Badminton and Volleyball Coach – Katherine played and managed volleyball, basketball, and softball for four years during her time at OLMA. She also was Stripe Captain and Stripe Cheer captain and was honored with the Sister Patricia Hartigan Award and the New York State Physical Education Award. She attended Saint Michael’s College in Vermont but returned to OLMA almost every year to coach volleyball camp before returning to OLMA full time as Director of Admissions & Recruitment.

JASON HELGUERO - JV Assistant Basketball - is a graduate of St. John's University and perennial basketball powerhouse Archbishop Molloy High School.  Coach Helguero currently serves as the Director of North Shore Lighting which provides competitive AAU basketball to the northern region of Nassau County.  Jason has years of experience as a coach, administrator, and commissioner for various organizations that include AAU, PAL, and CYO.  This past year Mr. Helguero coached and managed over a dozen basketball teams which included Lighting, Commack, Syosset, and St. Edward's CYO.  He is one of the top coaches on Long Island and is deeply committed to youth development.  His resume includes coaching well over a thousand games, numerous AAU tournament championships, and several Island Garden Super League titles.

LINDA JELOVICH - Head Swimming Coach - an alumni swimmer of OLMA and a former Division II freestyle swimmer for Adelphi University.  Jelovich retired from the Head Men and Women's Swim Coach position at Adelphi University where she had coached swimmers in qualifying for ECAC championships as well as NCAA. Prior to college coaching, she coached at the Town of North Hempstead as well as served as the Head Women's swim Coach at OLMA years ago.  Jelovich currently officiates Middle school and High School swimming.  She received her B.S. in Elementary Education, M.S. in Physical Education and Health Education and School Leadership and Technology (School Administration) degree all from Adelphi University.

CARLOS JUAREZ – Assistant Varsity VolleyballA native of El Salvador, Coach Juarez played at the National Level Division play, resulting in 3 National High School Championships.  He moved on and acted as the interim coach for the same team.  He initiated, planned, executed and formulated the plan for a volleyball team for the Police Academy in El Salvador.  Qualified as an International Class “B” referee and is a certified GEVA coach.  Coaching for 7 years with the Long Island Big Apple Volleyball Association (LIBA) his club team qualified for the Junior Olympics held in Texas.  Participating in clinics, Boys and Girls Clubs and leagues, Coach Suarez previously coached at Holy Trinity and Mepham HS before arriving at OLMA and coaching here for over 14 years.  He was a member of the varsity volleyball coaching staff that won the State championship title in 2005.

TIM MANGAN - Tennis "A" Coach - has been the director of racquet sports at Nassau Country Club for over 37 years.  Tim has been a national ranked tennis, platform, and squash player and has coached tennis at Chaminade for the past four years.  He has coached many top juniors in the metropolitan area and sent them to Division I, II, and III colleges for tennis and squash.  He has three children including a graduate of Our Lady of Mercy, Brooke and a son, Jack who graduated from Chaminade.

GRACE MORALES - JV Head Lacrosse Coach - Grace is a recent graduate of Widener University where she played goalie on the lacrosse team for four years.  She graduated from Our Lady of Mercy Academy where she played goalie on the lacrosse team and was the MVP of the championship game in 2013 when the team was undefeated season and league champions.  Grace has studied abroad in Barcelona, worked in Nicaragua on a service trip and coached lacrosse for the PAL for the Town of Oyster Bay.  In her first year coaching she led the team to the JV "A" Championship.

GERALD O'HAGAN - Assistant Cross Country and Assistant Winter & Spring Track & Field - ran cross country and track at Mater Christi High School and C.W. Post and continued to compete in road races for 30+ years after college.  He coached youth track & field for College Point and has led marathon training sessions as a member of The Running Center coaching staff and as a volunteer for the New York Road Runners.  Gerry received his B.S. from Manhattan College and M.B.A. from New York Institute of Technology.

KRISTIANA PELIZZOLI - Athletic Trainer - Kristiana is a 2012 graduate of Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville. She played 4 years of Varsity Lacrosse as well as 6 years on Varsity Soccer.  She was selected to receive the Coaches Award as the Team MVP for soccer and was All Conference 4 years in a row. She also received a Coaches Award for Lacrosse and was awarded a Primus Award for Most Athletic Female. She attended Pace University on an athletic scholarship for soccer and then transferred to Hofstra, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 2016 in Athletic Training. While at Hofstra she worked as a student athletic trainer at a local high school, for Hofstra Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, for Nassau Community College Men’s Lacrosse, and for Adelphi Men’s and Women’s soccer teams. 

STEPHANIE PIA - Assistant Winter & Spring Track & Field - an Our Lady of Mercy graduate she played 4 years of soccer, basketball and softball.  She was an All-League selection in soccer and was selected to receive the Sister Patricia Hartigan Award.

ELISE PRETE - Assistant Varsity Softball - Elise is a 2018 graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Academy that played four years of basketball and softball while in attendance.  She is currently attending Hofstra University while continuing to play softball at the club level.

NICHOLAS POSNER - Head JV Basketball, Varsity Assistant Lacrosse -  a graduate of Seaford High School and Coastal Carolina University.  Mr. Posner played lacrosse, basketball and hockey in high school.  While at Coastal Carolina he played attack on the men's lacrosse team.  Nicholas is currently teaching math at Our Lady of Mercy Academy. His team won the NSCHSGAA League "A" Lacrosse Title in 2017.

LAUREN RUPPERT (GIORDANO)- Head Varsity Lacrosse - received her B.S. and M.S. from Adelphi University and holds New York State Certification as a physical education and health educator. She played lacrosse on Adelphi's National Championship Teams.  She is involved in the Long Island Wave Program as a coach and administrator as well as a visiting coach at numerous camps across the nation.  She has taught in the Roslyn, Oceanside and Great Neck School Districts and has coached Volleyball, Lacrosse, Soccer and Basketball in several districts in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Her team won the NSCHSGAA League "A" Lacrosse Title in 2017.

ROBERT SCHULER - Head Cross Country, Winter & Spring Track & Field -
is a graduate of Queens College and ran at Mater Christi High School and Queens College.  He has coached the New Hyde Park Running Club and was the Head Coach and Coordinator for the Holy Spirit CYO Track team, Head Coach and Coordinator for St. Anne's Garden City CYO Track and Queens CYO Track and LITF Junior Olympics. Robert has a Level One Certification from the USA Track and Field Association.  Currently he is running competitively in track and road races in his age group.  

ROBERT A. SHEA - Assistant Swimming Coach - a graduate of St. Mary's in Manhasset where he was the captain of the swim team and two-time C.H.S.A.A. Champion.  He went on to St. John's University where he was an All Metropolitan for four years and captain of the team in his senior year.  He was awarded the McSweeney Award as the Outstanding Senior Student Athlete.  He coached Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club Swim Team to six championships over eight years.  Robert received his B.S. summa cum laude from St. John's University and his D.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.  This is his fourth year at Mercy and is in private practice in Huntington, N.Y.

RANDY TODD – Head Varsity Basketballa Richard Mcwalters “Coach of the Year” recipient at St. Dominic’s in 2006, he has coached CYO basketball for eleven years, winning one CYO League Championship and three Divisional titles.  His team won the NSCHSGAA JV Basketball League title in 2016 and was a finalist in 2017.  In addition, he has coached AAU Basketball with the LI Lightening, LI Xtreme and Team Shamrock.  Not limited to basketball, he has had success as a coach of three CYO League Championships in softball, as well as three LI Junior Soccer League Divisional Titles.  Mr. Todd will be moving up to take over the varsity basketball program in 2017.

MARYBETH TULLY - Tennis B Coach -Marybeth has been playing competitive tennis on Long Island for the last 20 years.  During that time, she has served as captain to many tennis and platform tennis teams. She continues to serve as an Administrator for 7 Tennis teams and 5 Platform teams at her Club.  She presently sits on the board of the Long Island Women’s Platform Tennis League which manages over 50 teams on Long Island. She also served as the Co-Chairperson to the first 3 "OLMA Tennis Open" events at the Academy.  She is a proud OLMA alum and has two daughters who have graduated & proudly represent their alma mater. She looks forward to returning to Mercy as the Tennis B coach.

KELLY TURTELLAssistant JV Lacrosse Coach - A 2014 graduate from Our Lady of Mercy, she managed and was a member of the basketball team for 2 years and a member of the lacrosse team for all 4 years, including the 2013 league championship team. She recently graduated from SUNY Purchase where she received her B.A. and was a 4-year member of the women’s lacrosse team. While at Purchase, she played midfield and attack and was a 2-year captain. She was named to the 2016 and 2018 Woman’s Lacrosse All-Conference First Team, and received multiple awards for All-Conference Honor Roll, Team MVP, and Student Athlete of the Week throughout her 4 years there. In 2017 she was selected to represent Purchase and participate in the NCAA’s Inaugural Regional Student-Athlete Engagement Program in Rhode Island amongst many other Division I, II, and III athletes around the world. She’s coached for the town of Harrison’s Youth Girls Lacrosse and has been coaching for Team 91 Tristate for almost 2 years, and the town of Byram Hills Youth Lacrosse.
